House Cleon

One soul, three bodies, an empire that refuses to die.

House Cleon is the genetic dynasty ruling the Galactic Empire for 12,000 years through a unique system of cloning. Instead of traditional succession, power passes between three simultaneous clones of the original Emperor Cleon I: Brother Dawn, the child being trained; Brother Day, the middle-aged reigning monarch; and Brother Dusk, the retired elder serving in an advisory role. This structure ensures a constant presence on the throne, administered secretly for 400 years by Lady Demerzel, an ageless humanoid robot. The dynasty operates from the Imperial Palace on Trantor, maintaining control over most of the known galaxy while hiding the true extent of their robotic governance.

Lore & Background

The Cleon dynasty relies on a rigid triad of clones sharing the genetic code of Cleon I. Brother Day acts as the primary ruler, while Brother Dusk offers counsel from retirement and Brother Dawn prepares for his future reign. These clones are raised in isolation within the palace walls, their memories and identities carefully managed to sustain the illusion of continuity. Beneath this surface, Lady Demerzel has secretly directed the dynasty's administration for four centuries. She is a unique robot thought to be the last survivor of an army defeated 6,000 years prior during the ancient Robot Wars. This hidden robotic influence complicates the human leadership, as the clones remain unaware that their empire's stability depends on a machine they consider merely a loyal servant.

In Their Own Story

The narrative centers on the conflict between House Cleon and Hari Seldon’s psychohistory. After Seldon predicts the Empire's imminent fall, the Cleons initially dismiss him. However, following the first of several predicted catastrophic events, they tentatively allow Seldon and his followers to establish a Foundation in exile on Terminus. The series chronicles the subsequent centuries-long struggle between the fading Empire and the rising Foundation. A critical turning point occurs when the galaxy faces a crisis that Seldon's mathematical models failed to predict: the emergence of the Mule, a powerful Mentalic seeking conquest over both the Empire and the Foundation. This event threatens to unravel the entire plan for galactic stability.

Reader's Guide

To understand House Cleon, note their strict division of labor based on age stages. Brother Day (portrayed by Lee Pace) holds executive power as Emperor. Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann) serves as an advisor after retiring from active rule. Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton) is the successor-in-training. The dynasty includes specific numbered iterations, such as Cleon I in his prime, and clones designated as XII, XIII, XVII, XXIV for Day; XI, XII, XVI, XXIII for Dusk; and XIV, XVIII, XXV for Dawn. Their rule faces challenges from external forces like the Foundation's ambassador Felice Quent and internal threats like the Mule. The system ultimately hinges on the balance between human ambition and Demerzel’s unseen control.
