Knowing Dornick may be the only person capable of fully understanding psychohistory, Seldon reveals his prediction of the Empire's imminent collapse and their plan to establish a Foundation on Terminus. Under surveillance by the Committee of Public Safety, Dornick is arrested and interrogated alongside Seldon before being exiled. The prequel Forward the Foundation (1993) details that he carries Crisis tapes to Terminus, oversees the Time Vault's installation, and inherits Seldon's Prime Radiant device immediately prior to Seldon's death. In the 2021 television series, Dornick is a mathematical prodigy from Synnax where science is forbidden. She solves an unsolved proof, joins Seldon in a trial for corroborating his calculations of the Empire's fall, and survives a terrorist attack that spares their lives. After a multi-year journey to Terminus, she discovers Raych Foss stabbing Seldon to death. Awakened from cryosleep 34 years later, she learns Foss executed her as an accomplice while a holographic Seldon explains the murder was necessary to force their separation and ensure Dornick's future.

In Their Own Story

In the television adaptation, Gaal Dornick's journey begins on Synnax before arriving at Trantor to solve a complex proof unsolved for over five hundred years. Following her arrest and trial with Seldon, she travels to Terminus where she develops a romantic relationship with Raych Foss, despite Seldon's disapproval of such emotional attachments. The turning point occurs during her daily swimming ritual when an urge leads her to witness Foss murdering Seldon; Foss then places the murder weapon in her hands and jettisons her from the ship. Three decades later, a digital copy of Seldon stored in the knife explains that he planned his own suicide to preserve devotion to his genius, but Foss's love for Dornick jeopardized this plan. Seldon had convinced Foss to kill him to force their separation, yet Foss foiled this by sending Dornick away. Furious at Seldon's manipulations and realizing she possesses latent psychic abilities that drew her to the murder scene, Dornick rejects a journey to Helicon and instead takes an escape pod on a 138-year voyage to Synnax. Upon arrival, she finds another pod containing Salvor Hardin, who reveals she is Dornick's biological daughter.

In Season Two of the television series, Dornick and Hardin determine Seldon's plan has gone off course. Dornick experiences a vision of Hardin's death at the hands of the Mule 150 years in the future, leading them to believe the Second Foundation is located on Ignis. There, they encounter Tellem Bond, a leader of Mentalics who resists Seldon's ideas and attempts to use Dornick as a host for her dying consciousness. After Seldon acquires an organic body, the trio saves Dornick from Bond and kills him. In the episode "Creation Myths," another Mentalic controlled by Bond's psyche attacks Dornick, but Hardin dies taking the bullet meant for her. This event proves to Seldon and Dornick that the future can be changed after all, illustrating that their vision of Hardin's death was not fixed. Consequently, they decide to enter cryosleep, awakening periodically to keep the Second Foundation on track, while the Mule vows in the future to destroy Dornick.
