In Their Own Story

Part I chronicles the Mule's hunt for the elusive group. The Mule dispatches Han Pritcher, once an opposition captain now converted, and Bail Channis, an "Unconverted" man who rose quickly through the ranks. Channis suspects the Second Foundation hides on Tazenda but is actually a planted agent from Rossem. When they arrive, the Mule reveals he has already destroyed Tazenda yet senses Channis's feigned dismay. The First Speaker intervenes, revealing that both planets were decoys and that Channis's knowledge was falsely implanted. With his fleet out of reach and his emotional control broken, the Mule is mentally subdued to live as a peaceful despot on Kalgan. Part II jumps 60 years later, after the Mule's death. The Foundation resumes independence but fears the Second Foundation's influence. A secret cabal led by Dr. Darell investigates, sending Homir Munn and his daughter Arcadia to find clues. They suspect the group is on Kalgan or Terminus itself. Arcadia aids a Trantorian trader named Preem Palver in escaping to Trantor. The Foundation defeats a warlord named Stettin, who claimed the Mule's title of First Citizen. Darell creates a "mind static" device that exposes the cabal member Pelleas Anthor as a Second Foundation agent. However, this victory is a trap: Anthor and his comrades were martyrs planted to mislead the Foundation into believing the enemy was gone. Arcadia had been mentally adjusted at birth to ensure her loyalty without detection. The true location is revealed as Trantor, with Preem Palver serving as the First Speaker.
