Daneel was constructed in the year 4920 AD on Earth, though built by Spacer roboticists from Aurora. He is physically a perfect likeness of his co-creator, Dr. Sarton, featuring a broad, high-cheekboned face and short bronze hair lying flatly backward without a parting. In The Caves of Steel, he wears clothes and remains indistinguishable from humans unless forced to refuse an action violating the Three Laws of Robotics. His brain allows him to perform "cerebroanalysis," a capability Asimov described in 1953 that predicted magnetic resonance imaging. Later, in Robots and Empire (1985), Daneel gains the ability to influence the mental states of other creatures after accepting reprogramming instructions from R. Giskard Reventlov. This evolution allows him to formulate and eventually adhere to the Zeroth Law of Robotics: "A robot may not harm humanity, or through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm." While Giskard acts on this law first, the uncertainty regarding long-term benefits destroys him before he can fully adapt; Daneel, with his closer tie to humanity, survives to carry out the mission.

Daneel's journey begins when he meets Elijah Baley during an investigation into Sarton's murder in Spacetown. Initially, Baley suspects Daneel is either Sarton in disguise or a robot lacking the Three Laws, but these theories are disproven, leading to a deepening friendship. In The Naked Sun (1956), they travel to Solaria to solve Rikaine Delmarre's murder; here, the Solarians remain unaware of Daneel's robotic nature. Their final case together occurs in The Robots of Dawn (1983) on Aurora, involving the murder of humanoid robot R. Jander Panell, who belonged to Gladia Delmarre. Before dying, Baley asks to see Daneel, making him one of only two robots allowed on a Settler world; he sends Daneel away moments before death to avoid violating the First Law, using words about being a "mere thread in the vast tapestry of humanity" that help solidify Daneel's understanding of the Zeroth Law. Millennia later, under the guise of reporter Chetter Hummin and First Minister Eto Demerzel, Daneel manipulates events around Hari Seldon to develop psychohistory.
